Q: How does SU Tech Transfer define "Success"?

A: Many Ways...

Our success stories fall into the following general categories/scenarios:

Step 1: An invention disclosure is submitted to Tech Transfer. This in and of itself can be a success story.

Step 2:  SU protects the Intellectual property using the most appropriate method(s), whether that be a patent application, copyright, trademark application or trade secret.

Step 3:

  • Scenario 1:  The intellectual property is licensed to an existing company
  • Scenario 2:  The intellectual property is licensed to a start up company involving the inventor
  • Scenario 3: The intellectual property is licensed to a start up company not involving the inventor, but in which the inventor enters into a consulting agreement with the licensee
  • Scenario 4: The intellectual property is licensed to another university that has received funding and wants to test the efficacy of the technology in a particular setting
  • Scenario 5:  The intellectual property is licensed to a company involving the inventor AND the startup pursues and receives funding that is only available to projects involving university/industry collaborations
  • Scenario 6:  The inventor “talks up” the technology with potential licensees
  • Scenario 7:  |Inventors curious about starting a company around their technology learn more about what is needed by participating in a Pre-Seed workshop.  Please contact jhoh@syr.edu to learn more about this opportunity.
