Our role is to help your creativity change the world.
Perhaps your research has resulted in an invention. Perhaps you have developed a novel software algorithm. May be you have amassed valuable survey findings or market research. These and other forms of intellectual property can be commercialized to generate funds for you, your department and the University.
Funds from license royalties are distributed as follows: the university recoups all of its direct expenses for legal fees, marketing, licensing etc .plus an overhead recovery of 15 percent. The balance is then distributed 50 percent to the University .As the inventor, you can receive your shape personally or elect for some or all of it to go to your department or program. The University’s share that does not go to your department or program is used to support ongoing research and intellectual property development at large.

As a graduate student or researcher, you will present your ideas to colleagues worldwide and publish extensively for the benefit of academic discourse and professional development. Sometimes what you will present or publish will contain valuable intellectual property that, if not properly protected beforehand, will completely lose its licensable value the moment it is publicly disclosed. It is therefore important to the University and you to arrange for timely protection of intellectual property without obstructing your publication and professional development.
This happens successfully when you alert the Office of Technology Transfer and Industrial Development to potential intellectual property opportunities at least 30-45 days before you present a paper or submit an article for publication.
