Important GuideLines

  1. The Policy on Ownership and Management of Syracuse University Intellectual Property, which applies to all faculties, staff, students or anyone utilizing University resources or facilities says that copyright works, excluding computer software, belong to the creator except if there are sponsor restrictions or when the work is created as an explicit work assignment for the University. Patentable technology and computer software developed from sponsored research and/or University allocated resources belong to Syracuse University Patentable technology and software belong to the inventor if developed using only generally available resources[ See Policy at http://provost.syr.edu/provost/Faculty/policies/facpolicies.aspx#7]
  2. University members who have created intellectual property should immediately file an Intellectual Property Disclosure form with Office of Technology Transfer and Industrial Development will then meet with the creators of the intellectual property to discuss it, review any prior or upcoming publications or presentations that disclose technology, determine what funding sponsors have contributed to the research to the research, and develop a potential legal protection and marketing strategy.
  3. After performing an assessment of the intellectual property, Office of Technology Transfer and Industrial Development pursues legal protection and commercialization or, with the permission of the sponsor and the S.U Committee on Intellectual Property to its creators. When Office of Technology Transfer and Industrial Development pursue protection and commercialization, it assumes all costs and responsibilities. The input of the creator(s) of the intellectual property is actively sought, however to assure appropriate definition of the intellectual property in legal fillings and to assist in development of marketing strategies.
  4. Once Office of Technology Transfer and Industrial Development finds a commercial partner for the intellectual property and negotiates a license royalties will be generated periodically .Office of Technology Transfer and Industrial Development will distribute the royalty income as outlined in the Policy and elected by the creator(s).Office of Technology Transfer and Industrial Development will also manage all aspects of commercial agreements.
